Before anyone books a villa, there are usually four more practical questions sitting underneath it: do I need a visa, which flight actually gets me there, will my card work when I arrive, and when should I go. The answers depend a lot on where you are travelling from, and mixing up advice meant for one market with your own is how people miss a direct flight, pack the wrong currency, or land in the middle of the wrong season entirely.

Entry and visa requirements
Maldives entry is straightforward for the large majority of travellers. A free tourist visa is issued on arrival, no advance application or embassy visit needed, and the standard duration is 30 days. A specific list of nationalities get 90 days instead under bilateral arrangements, including India, Sri Lanka, Russia and several Central Asian nations. China is not on that list, Chinese passport holders receive the standard 30 days, under a separate mutual visa-exemption agreement between the two governments. Always confirm the rule for the passport you will actually be travelling on, since these arrangements are set bilaterally and can change.
The visa on arrival is only part of what's required. The Maldives' official entry requirements also ask for a machine-readable passport valid for at least one month beyond your stay, confirmed onward or return travel, a prepaid confirmed booking at a registered accommodation facility, and sufficient funds to cover your stay. Travellers arriving from a yellow-fever endemic area also need a valid certificate. We check all of this against your specific booking when we confirm it, but it's worth knowing these exist as real requirements, not just the visa stamp itself.
Separately, every traveller, regardless of nationality, needs to complete the IMUGA traveller declaration, a free online arrival form covering your travel and health details, due within 96 hours before you fly. It's worth being clear that IMUGA is a declaration, not the visa itself, the two are separate things handled through the same official Immigration portal. Since August 2024, only the arrival declaration is required, the separate departure declaration that used to apply was removed. The form is genuinely free, Maldives Immigration has specifically warned travellers about third-party websites charging a fee to complete it on their behalf, so complete it directly on the official portal or let us walk you through it.

Getting there: flight connectivity by market
Most international flights land at Velana International Airport (MLE), a small island just north of the capital, Male, and it's the gateway every market in this guide connects through. A small number of international routes also use Gan International Airport in the far south and Hanimaadhoo International Airport in the north, mainly regional connections such as Colombo to Gan or Trivandrum and Bengaluru to Hanimaadhoo, but Velana handles the vast majority of resort transfers.
From Velana, how you reach your resort generally depends on distance, though the exact transfer method and timing are set by the resort itself, not a fixed rule. Resorts within roughly 80 kilometres typically use a speedboat transfer, though operating hours vary by resort, some run around the clock, others stop overnight, so this is worth confirming for your specific booking. Resorts further out typically use a scenic seaplane flight of around 20 to 60 minutes, but seaplanes only operate during daylight hours (roughly 6am to 4pm) and carry standard luggage weight limits. The furthest atolls, over 200 kilometres out, generally use a short domestic flight followed by a speedboat, domestic flights run to fixed schedules rather than adjusting for your arrival time. If your international flight lands late in the day, after seaplane or last speedboat services stop, you may need an overnight stay near the airport before transferring the next morning, worth checking when you book your flights, not just your resort. Weather can affect any of these transfer types, particularly during the wet season. Your resort or our team will confirm exactly what applies to your booking.
Getting to Velana itself is where your home market actually matters. Some countries have genuine nonstop flights, others route through a hub, and that difference affects both your total travel time and how far ahead you should book.
Flying from China
China Southern flies nonstop from Guangzhou, and Maldivian, the Maldives' national carrier, launched its own nonstop service to Chengdu, Beijing and Shanghai in January 2025, flying an A330 on the route. From Hong Kong, Hong Kong Airlines runs a daily nonstop service, a steadier option than Greater Bay Airlines, whose Hong Kong to Male flights currently run as seasonal windows (around Lunar New Year and in the northern summer) rather than year-round. Travellers from Chongqing can currently reach Male via a one-stop routing through Colombo. China sent close to 170,000 visitors to the Maldives in just the first half of 2026, around 16 percent of all arrivals, making it the single largest source market for the first time. UnionPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay are all supported through the Bank of Maldives merchant network, following partnerships signed in late 2025, though it's still worth confirming acceptance with your specific resort rather than assuming every property and shop takes all three.
Flying from Russia
Aeroflot operates the main nonstop service between Moscow and Male, roughly nine hours in the air. Other Russian carriers have flown this route in past seasons, so it is always worth asking us to check current schedules rather than assuming last year's flights still run. There is no direct service from St Petersburg, travellers from there generally connect through Moscow. Russia has remained one of the Maldives' two largest source markets through 2026, and within that, the mix has shifted upmarket, five-star resort bookings rose from under half to nearly 60 percent of Russian bookings between April 2025 and April 2026, with family travel also growing as a share of arrivals.
Flying from India
India has some of the best direct connectivity of any source market, IndiGo alone serves a long list of Indian cities into Male, with Mumbai and Bengaluru among the shortest hops at roughly two to three hours in the air. Air India flies direct from Mumbai and Chennai, and Maldivian runs regular direct flights from Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. Since October 2024, RuPay cards are accepted at thousands of merchants through the Bank of Maldives network, alongside standard Visa and Mastercard. Vegetarian and Jain dining is also a genuine strength at a number of resorts, several run dedicated all-vegetarian restaurants or Indian-menu dining rooms, though it is always worth confirming the specifics for your chosen resort with us directly. India was the Maldives' single largest source market in 2022 and 2023, dipped in 2024, and has been recovering since, with the Maldives targeting 200,000 to 300,000 Indian visitors across 2025 and 2026 through expanded flight connectivity and renewed marketing. In practical terms, that means more direct routes, competitive fares and growing resort familiarity with Indian travellers' needs, all genuinely useful context if you're planning a trip now.
Flying from the United Kingdom
British Airways flies nonstop from Heathrow year-round, though frequency varies with the season, daily in winter, dropping to a few times a week in spring and summer. Virgin Atlantic runs its own nonstop Heathrow to Male service seasonally rather than year-round, returning from late October at a reduced frequency before stepping up to daily flights by early December, giving UK travellers a genuine second direct option through the peak season. The flight runs a little over ten hours either way. The UK is consistently one of the Maldives' top five source markets, with demand concentrated in the northern-hemisphere winter months, the classic escape-the-weather booking pattern.
Flying from Germany
Condor and Discover Airlines both fly nonstop from Frankfurt, around ten hours direct. Munich and Berlin currently have no nonstop service, travellers from those cities connect via Frankfurt or another European hub, generally adding two to four hours to the total journey. Germany is a long-standing top-five Maldives source market.
Flying from Italy
ITA Airways flies nonstop from Rome Fiumicino year-round, a little over nine hours, several times a week with extra frequency added during peak season. Neos also flies the Rome route and runs a seasonal nonstop Milan Malpensa to Male service, roughly three times a week from October through the following summer, giving northern Italy a direct option through most of the year rather than a permanent, year-round one. Italy has grown into one of the Maldives' very largest source markets, second only to Russia in early 2026 arrival figures.
Flying from the United States
There is no nonstop flight from the US, so this is the one market where a connection is unavoidable. From the East Coast, routing through Doha on Qatar Airways is generally the fastest option, with Istanbul, Abu Dhabi and Dubai as other well-served alternatives. From the West Coast, total travel time typically runs closer to a full day once you account for the connection, via hubs including Istanbul, Zurich, Singapore or London. Given the length of the journey, it is worth building at least one comfortable connection into your itinerary rather than the tightest one available, and booking several months ahead for the best fares and seat choice.

The Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR) is the official currency, but in practice the tourism industry runs largely on US dollars, most resort rates, bills and menus are priced in USD, and it works as a reliable second currency almost everywhere you will actually spend money on a resort island. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at resorts, sometimes with a small card surcharge, and UnionPay acceptance has expanded significantly through Bank of Maldives partnerships. Local islands and smaller shops lean more cash-based, so it is worth carrying some cash if your itinerary includes any time outside the resort itself.

Best time to visit
The Maldives runs on two seasons that apply to the whole country, regardless of which market you are travelling from. The dry season, driven by the northeast monsoon, generally runs January through March, with December and April as transitional months. The wet season, driven by the southwest monsoon, runs roughly mid-May through November, bringing more frequent rain showers, though these are typically short bursts rather than washed-out days, not constant rain.
December through April is peak season across the industry, partly a straightforward weather-escape pattern for travellers from colder northern-hemisphere markets. May through November is generally better value, with more availability and lower rates, and still very swimmable, just with a higher chance of a passing shower, rain isn't evenly spread across the whole archipelago either, a shower over one atoll can be clear skies an hour away. On top of this general pattern, some markets have their own booking peaks layered in, Chinese New Year and Golden Week both drive strong demand from China, and European school holidays shape a lot of UK, German and Italian bookings, so if you are travelling around one of these windows, it is worth booking further ahead than usual.
Weather is also only one factor. What actually counts as the "best" time depends on what you're prioritising, and it's worth thinking about that before you fix your dates.

Combining the Maldives with Sri Lanka
A detail worth knowing regardless of your home market: many international routings into the Maldives already connect through hubs like Colombo, Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul or Singapore, and for some travellers, Colombo is one of those options. If your available routing already connects through Colombo, or you simply want to combine culture and nature with a resort stay, a short add-on in Sri Lanka, a few days in the hill country or the cultural triangle before or after your Maldives resort stay, is a genuinely easy way to see two very different destinations on one trip. Sri Lanka has its own separate entry requirements, some nationalities need an ETA arranged in advance, and baggage allowances can differ between the two flights, so this needs planning rather than being automatic, and it generally needs enough total time to justify the extra movement rather than a rushed one or two nights. Will my Mir card work in the Maldives?
Not reliably, Mir is not an established payment network in the Maldives. Cash in US dollars or a prepaid international card is the safer approach, and most Russian bookings are prepaid in full to the tour operator before arrival for exactly this reason.
Can I pay directly in US dollars?
Yes, at resorts. USD functions as a de facto second currency across the tourism industry, most resort rates and bills are priced in it, so American travellers in particular can generally use USD cash or cards directly without exchanging into rufiyaa.
