Your Maldives holiday starts with a connection: usually a speedboat, a seaplane, or a domestic flight followed by a boat. The right arrival time matters as much as the transfer itself. Most journeys in this guide start at Velana International Airport (MLE). There are exceptions: some travellers arrive internationally at Gan, and properties such as Equator Village have a road transfer from the airport.

Seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight: how each one works
Some resorts offer one transfer method; others offer a choice. Distance, available airports and the resort’s arrangements determine your options. Book the transfer approved by your property rather than assuming you can arrange an independent replacement.
| Method | What to expect | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Speedboat | Boat from an agreed airport or harbour jetty; shared services can involve a wait. | Departure time, shared or private service, and whether your late arrival is accepted. |
| Seaplane | Check-in, shuttle to the seaplane terminal, then a daylight flight. Some journeys include stops or a final boat ride. | International-flight cutoff, baggage, lounge access and the total journey rather than flying time alone. |
| Domestic flight + onward transfer | Flight to a regional airport, followed by a boat or, for some properties, a road transfer. | Seats and connection time for both legs, including any evening boat service. |
A short speedboat journey can simplify a brief stay. A seaplane offers views of the atolls, while domestic flights provide access to regional airports. None of these options guarantees a shorter airport wait or a particular connection.
Arriving at Velana: from the plane to your transfer
Arrange your transfer in advance and send the property your flight numbers, travel dates and passenger details by its booking deadline. Ask where its representative will meet you and save an emergency contact.
- Before departure: check entry eligibility. Maldives Immigration requires foreign arriving travellers, including children, to submit a free Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before arrival. A tourist visa on arrival is subject to entry requirements and restrictions; it is not unconditional for every passport. See the official tourist-visa guidance.
- After landing: clear immigration, collect luggage and pass customs. Check official customs guidance before packing restricted goods or medicines.
- Meet the representative: follow the instructions supplied with your booking. They will direct you to your boat, flight check-in or connecting terminal.
- For a seaplane: complete check-in and take the arranged shuttle to the seaplane terminal. Lounge access depends on your booking.
- Allow for waiting: immigration, baggage collection, shared departures and operational changes all add time. A quoted 30-minute flight does not mean you will reach the resort 30 minutes after landing internationally.
Choosing the right airport and onward connection
Your arrival airport and your resort transfer should be planned together. For a holiday starting at Velana International Airport (MLE), the onward journey may be by speedboat, seaplane or a domestic flight. If your itinerary uses another international gateway, ask our Maldives team to check how it connects with your chosen property before you book.
The airports below are selected examples relevant to resort transfers, not a complete list of the Maldives’ international and domestic airports. Connections may use Dharavandhoo, Maamigili, Dhaalu, Kooddoo or Gan, depending on the property and itinerary. An airport with international status may also serve domestic journeys; that status alone does not tell you which flights are available for your dates.
The useful question is which route works for your whole holiday. The airport serving a resort is not necessarily in the same atoll, and the onward boat can make a substantial difference to the journey. We’ll check the flight connection, boat departure, baggage allowance and return itinerary together—including whether an alternative arrival airport makes sense for your stay.
Your transfer confirmation should identify the airline and route. Seaplane and domestic operators have their own baggage and assistance policies, so we’ll help you check the requirements for the service you are booked on.
On board a seaplane
These are small aircraft with limited cabin space. Shared flights may call at other resorts, so flying time and total transfer time can differ. A direct shared flight is possible; a private charter is not the only way to fly without a stop.
- Keep essential medication and a change of clothes in your permitted hand luggage.
- Follow crew instructions on seating and loading.
- Discuss mobility assistance, bulky equipment and infant arrangements before paying for the transfer.

Journey times are approximate and exclude airport procedures and waiting unless stated. Final schedules depend on your travel dates and operating conditions.
"Checked with" shows whether the figure came from the resort's own site or, where the resort gives none, from a travel agent or the transfer operator. "Confirm with us" means the resort does not publish its night-transfer hours.
What time do you need to land in Malé?
There is no universal “last seaplane” time for every resort. TMA advises international arrival by 3:30pm and international departure after 9am. These are planning guidelines, not a guaranteed connection; your resort may require an earlier arrival. See TMA’s FAQ.
For example, Nova publishes a 4pm seaplane departure limit and asks international guests to arrive at least an hour earlier. Kandima’s published guidance gives a 3pm seaplane departure cutoff and a one-hour international-arrival buffer. Confirm these requirements directly before selecting flights.
If you miss the accepted arrival window, ask whether a domestic flight and onward boat can both be confirmed. Otherwise, arrange an overnight stay near the airport and the next available transfer. Do not assume the first flight next morning is guaranteed, or that an unused resort night will be refunded.
Use Malé local time when checking international arrivals. If your resort observes a different “island time”, ask it to label the transfer instructions clearly.
Going home: the return transfer
Check the return journey before booking your international departure. Your resort and airline must allow enough time for the transfer, check-in, security and possible delays. A daylight seaplane may not connect with an early international flight.
- Send flight details when booking. Deadlines vary: some properties need a week or more, so do not rely on a universal 48-hour rule.
- Ask when the final departure time will be confirmed. Shared seaplane timings can be communicated close to travel and may change.
- Plan the waiting period. Late checkout, a day room or airport lounge may cost extra and may not be available.
- For early departures: ask whether you must leave the resort the previous afternoon and who pays for the overnight stay.
How much do Maldives transfers cost?
The examples below are publicly published by the resorts on their official websites or in official rate sheets. They are reference prices, not a Zaha Travels quotation.
Ask for the total return price for every passenger, including tax, service charges and any required overnight stay. Check whether the package includes transfers and which child ages qualify for a reduced fare. Shared and private services are priced differently.
A published example, not a quotation: Nova lists return seaplane transfers of US$475 per adult and US$325 per child aged 2–11, including taxes, for travel through 10 January 2027. It lists US$495 and US$355 respectively from 11 January 2027 to 7 January 2028. Confirm the applicable offer and dates before booking. Nova also currently lists an additional US$40 fuel surcharge per person; this is extra to the quoted transfer rate. Ask us to confirm the applicable surcharge and final total for your booking.
Watch the price basis. Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru’s published rate sheet quotes standard TMA transfers each way: US$460 per adult and US$230 per child for 11 January–20 December 2026, plus 28.7% service charge and GST. The 21 December 2026–10 January 2027 rates are US$520 and US$260 each way, before those additions. These are not return or all-inclusive figures.
Have the transfer identified separately in your quote, even when included in a package. Confirm amendment charges, missed-connection arrangements and whether a discounted transfer depends on a minimum stay.
Baggage limits on seaplanes and domestic flights
For TMA: the published allowance is 20kg checked baggage plus 5kg hand luggage per person. Infants have no separate allowance. Excess weight is charged at US$5 per kg plus tax, subject to operational limits; a single bag must not exceed 32kg. Confirm the current rules in TMA’s FAQ and your booking.
Do not carry these limits across to every operator or domestic fare. Ask for the baggage allowance for each leg of your journey. Pre-arrange surfboards, diving equipment, wheelchairs and other bulky items; payment of an excess fee alone does not guarantee carriage.
- Pack to the lowest allowance on your itinerary.
- Keep medication, documents and essential clothing in your permitted cabin bag.
- Ask what happens if baggage must follow on a later service.
- Confirm storage options before relying on leaving extra luggage at the airport.
Weather, delays and seasickness
Weather can affect boats and aircraft in any season. Leave practical connection buffers and keep the resort’s contact details available while travelling.
- If a service is disrupted: ask about the next available departure and approved alternative routes. Accommodation and rebooking costs depend on your booking terms.
- Insurance: check the policy’s actual cover, limits and exclusions for delays and missed connections, including separately booked journeys.
- Rough seas: follow the crew’s advice on seating and securing bags. Keep electronics protected from spray.
- Motion sickness: ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable prevention, especially for children, pregnancy or existing medication.
Special situations
Diving before a flight
DAN’s flying-after-diving guidance recommends at least 12 hours after a single no-decompression dive and at least 18 hours after repetitive dives or multiple days of diving, with substantially longer intervals after dives requiring decompression stops. These recommendations concern the flight exposures described by DAN; do not assume every low-flying seaplane has the same risk profile. Give your dive centre the complete flight itinerary and follow its more conservative guidance. Do not fly with suspected decompression illness; seek medical advice.
Infants, pregnancy and accessibility
Confirm infant age limits, seating and baggage with the actual operator. Child fare bands also vary by property.
Manta Air’s FAQ requires a doctor’s or midwife’s letter after 29 weeks of pregnancy and sets out MEDIF-B documentation; it normally does not accept travel after 36 weeks for a single pregnancy or 32 weeks for multiple pregnancies. Check your own airline’s requirements before travel.
For reduced mobility, describe your assistance needs and wheelchair dimensions, weight and battery type before booking. Ask about aircraft steps, lifting assistance, floating platforms, boat boarding and the route to your room. A speedboat is not automatically accessible, and a wheelchair is not automatically prohibited on every seaplane service.
Tipping transfer staff is optional; follow your preference rather than treating it as a required transfer charge.
Staying on a local island: ferries and shared speedboats
A local-island stay may involve a scheduled speedboat, ferry, domestic flight or a combination. The practical details matter: where the service departs, how your international flight connects, and whether the return journey gives you enough time at the airport.
Book your local-island stay with us, and leave the transfer coordination to our Maldives team. We’ll check the available services for your travel dates, arrange the agreed transfers, and explain the departure point, check-in time, baggage allowance and costs before you travel. You’ll have one team coordinating your accommodation and onward journey.
This is especially useful when combining a local island with a resort. We’ll plan the connection between both stays, check whether you need to travel via Malé, and identify any overnight stop required by the schedules. It helps you understand the complete journey before committing to separate bookings.
Some services depart from Malé rather than the airport, and operating days vary by route. Public ferries do not necessarily serve private resort islands. We’ll check the arrangements that apply to your itinerary and help coordinate any necessary changes with the operators if a service is disrupted.
Which transfer suits your trip?
- Short stay: consider the complete journey and likely waiting time. A nearby property can leave more time for your holiday.
- Evening arrival: choose a property that confirms a connection for your specific flight, including any boat leg.
- Travelling with children: weigh the number of connections, cabin space, luggage and waiting facilities.
- Combining Sri Lanka and the Maldives: check the actual Colombo–Malé flight schedule against the resort’s accepted arrival window.
- Splitting your stay between properties: ask for a priced, confirmed inter-property itinerary. Do not assume a direct boat or seaplane connection; you may need to travel via Malé.
- Seeking a particular reef or diving experience: assess the property and dive sites themselves rather than assuming a more distant atoll is quieter or better.
Common transfer mistakes
- Booking the flight first: get the property’s arrival and departure requirements before committing.
- Reading flight time as door-to-door time: add airport procedures, shared-service waits and onward travel.
- Assuming an alternative route runs at night: get confirmation for both the flight and the boat.
- Comparing incomplete prices: distinguish return from one-way fares, and tax-inclusive from tax-exclusive amounts.
- Ignoring the return journey: check early departures, diving intervals and overnight requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose between seaplane and speedboat?
Some properties offer both; others have one standard route. Ask which options are available for your dates and flight times.
What time does the last seaplane leave Malé?
There is no single time for every route. Seaplanes operate in daylight; use the resort’s confirmed international-arrival cutoff, not sunset or a general airport guideline.
What happens if my flight arrives too late?
A confirmed alternative route may be possible. Otherwise, plan an overnight stay near the airport and the next available transfer. Check the cost and cancellation terms.
How long does a seaplane transfer take?
The flight may be only part of the journey. See the property estimates above, then allow for check-in, waiting, possible stops and any final boat ride.
Are transfers included in the room price?
Only if your offer says so. Check the full return cost for every traveller, taxes and child age bands.
How much luggage can I take?
Use the allowance stated for your actual operator and booking. The baggage section explains TMA’s published limits; other services may differ.
Can domestic flights connect with an evening arrival?
Sometimes. A domestic route alone does not guarantee a same-night arrival: seats, connection time and the onward boat must all be confirmed.
Which properties have short airport transfers?
Niva Kurumba publishes a roughly 10-minute boat journey, while Taj Exotica and Sheraton Maldives Full Moon publish around 15 minutes. These are boat times, excluding airport procedures and waiting.
When will I know my transfer time?
Ask the resort when it issues the final schedule. Shared-flight timings can be confirmed close to travel and remain subject to operational changes.
Where do I check in for a seaplane?
Follow your resort representative to the appropriate check-in point. The onward shuttle takes you to the seaplane terminal; check whether lounge access is included.
Can I dive on my last day?
Plan the last dive around every flight, including the resort transfer. Discuss the complete itinerary with your dive centre and follow the appropriate no-fly interval; see the diving section above.
Do I need to tip transfer staff?
Tipping is optional. It is not a mandatory transfer fee.
