Christmas in the Maldives can begin with Christmas carols beside the lagoon and end with dinner beneath the stars. Between those moments, there are family adventures, island traditions, sports, creative workshops and evenings filled with music.
For Christmas 2026 and New Year 2027, resorts across the Maldives have planned celebrations that give each island its own festive personality. You can join a beach carnival, discover Maldivian cooking, enjoy a special dining experience or welcome the New Year with a lively countdown. There is also time to slow down, sail into the sunset and enjoy being together.
The choice of island shapes that experience. Our team in the Maldives helps you connect the celebrations you enjoy with the island, villa and travel dates that suit you. These examples from resorts we work with show how different a festive holiday can feel from one island to the next.
A season of experiences. Many programmes continue from late December into early January. Look beyond Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve: the activities between them can be some of the most enjoyable parts of your stay.
Christmas traditions with an island setting
The setting changes, but many familiar traditions remain. Christmas trees light up beside the sea, Christmas carols bring guests together, and children look forward to Santa’s arrival on the beach.
At Joy Island, the Joyful Horizons programme opens on 22 December with tree lighting on Rainbow Beach. Christmas Eve brings a gala dinner and an evening party, while Christmas Day includes Santa’s arrival, festive brunch and live music.
At Cocoon Maldives, Christmas begins with tree lighting and Christmas carols on 22 December. Christmas Day combines Santa’s beach arrival with festive meals, a dolphin cruise and evening entertainment. For families, these shared occasions give the holiday a sense of celebration from morning to night.
Our suggestion is to arrive before the occasion you most want to enjoy. A little time to settle into the island makes it easier to join the celebrations at your own pace. If tree lighting is part of your family’s wish list, arriving on Christmas Eve could mean missing it. We start with the event dates, then work back to your arrival and resort transfer.

Welcome 2027 with dinner, music and a beach countdown
New Year’s Eve brings a different energy to the islands. Gala tables, live performances and evening parties turn the final hours of December into an occasion in their own right.
At You & Me Maldives, the evening moves from cocktails at Cheers Bar Beach to a gala dinner on The Sand Beach. Its Disco Around the World Party brings performances, live music and DJ sets before midnight fireworks.
Joy Island also plans a beach gala and midnight fireworks, while Kandima Maldives builds towards its Showtime finale with entertainment and a New Year 2027 fireworks celebration at Smoked Beach.
For a different kind of headline moment, InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau has announced a New Year’s Eve performance by Pixie Lott, alongside a gala and a midnight drone and fireworks display.
There are different ways to enjoy the evening. Some guests want to dance late into the night; others prefer a memorable dinner and the countdown. Tell us which atmosphere you enjoy, and we can help you choose accordingly. For guests who enjoy the party but prefer quiet at bedtime, we also consider the villa’s position in relation to the main entertainment areas; specific locations remain subject to availability.

Festive adventures the whole family can share
A family holiday becomes especially memorable when everyone has something to look forward to. The festive programmes offer plenty of reasons to put down a screen and join in.
At Joy Island, activities include Beach Family Olympics, a Family Kayak Race and a Family Amazing Race. The children’s programme adds coconut-shell painting, gingerbread crafts, treasure hunts and a talent show.
Cocoon Maldives brings Christmas crafts, gingerbread-house making, a children’s fashion show and Mini Olympics into its Kids Village programme.
At Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Carnival of the Isles combines performers, games, music and family entertainment. Santa is scheduled to arrive on 25 December, followed by the island’s Colour Run on 26 December.
These experiences suit different ages and interests. For younger children, crafts and familiar Christmas traditions may be the highlight. Older children and teenagers may be more drawn to sport, creative challenges and activities they can enjoy with their parents.
Planning with children? Share their ages and the activities they enjoy. We look at the family programme alongside sleeping arrangements and the journey to the island, so the holiday works for everyone travelling. Tell us about your family holiday.

Sport, art and entertainment between the celebrations
The days between Christmas and New Year offer room to try something different.
Kandima’s Showtime Fairground programme brings together sports, live entertainment and creativity. Dustin Brown is scheduled for 17–27 December 2026, with tennis clinics and coaching. Footballers Lucy Bronze and Ona Batlle are scheduled for 26 December 2026–1 January 2027, with children’s coaching, games and football challenges. The programme also features a KULA art festival on 28 December, showcasing Maldivian creativity through arts and crafts.
Beyond the headline guests, the calendar includes beach competitions, running, games and creative workshops. This gives an active family several ways to shape a day, whether everyone joins the same activity or meets again for dinner with different stories to share.
At Sun Siyam Olhuveli, circus acts, DJs, live performers and carnival experiences give the festive period a lively atmosphere. If entertainment is a major part of your holiday, the programme deserves as much attention as the villa.

Let food become part of the festive adventure
Festive dining can take you from a beach barbecue to an intimate chef-led dinner, with new flavours to discover along the way.
At You & Me Maldives, the programme includes Krug Beneath the Waves on 28 December, a five-course dining experience with Champagne at H2O, its underwater restaurant. Other planned experiences include dining aboard the Love Boat and a sunken-table setting in the sand.
LUX* South Ari Atoll takes an Around the World approach to the season, bringing international flavours and cultural inspiration into its festive programme. Special dining experiences sit alongside family activities and island entertainment.
At Alila Kothaifaru Maldives, Christmas Day features a dinner created by two chefs, followed later in the week by a chef-selected omakase menu and a Japanese-style skewer barbecue night. It is an appealing way to give a longer stay several distinct dining occasions.
You do not need to fill every evening. Choose a few experiences that excite you and leave room for relaxed meals together. If a particular restaurant or dinner is part of your holiday wish list, mention it when we plan your stay.

Discover Maldivian traditions during your stay
Festive celebrations also create opportunities to connect with the islands’ culture.
At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, the PRISM programme includes coconut-oil making, Maldivian cooking, evening tea with storytelling and cultural performances. These experiences bring local flavours, skills and stories into the holiday.
Joy Island includes a Maldivian cultural evening on New Year’s Day. At Kandima, local arts and crafts, coconut-leaf activities and Boduberu, traditional Maldivian drumming, add another dimension to the festive calendar.
For us, these are valuable moments to build into an island stay. A cooking session or an evening of music can leave you with a memory of the Maldives that goes well beyond its scenery.
Make space for romance, wellness and the ocean
A festive holiday can still have a relaxed pace. You might join the main celebrations and spend the rest of your stay enjoying quiet mornings, time on the water and meals together.
Milaidhoo’s A Tropical Season of Joy combines sailing, wellness, cultural discovery and dining. Its programme includes Christmas Eve gatherings and oceanfront meals alongside yoga and sunset experiences.
At You & Me Maldives, couples can explore experiences such as a castaway sandbank picnic, sunset fishing and spa rituals. Its adults-only setting gives the festive programme a distinctly romantic focus.
Marine experiences add another dimension. LUX* South Ari Atoll includes opportunities to head out with marine specialists in search of whale sharks, while other programmes feature dolphin cruises, snorkelling and diving. Wildlife encounters follow nature’s timing, which is part of what makes them special.

Festive dates worth building your holiday around
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are only part of the calendar. These selected occasions illustrate why a small change to your travel dates can change what you experience.
