British Airways flies direct from London Gatwick (LGW) to Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) three times a week during winter 2026/27. The first flight left Gatwick on 23 October 2026 and landed in Sri Lanka on 24 October.
Count your nights in Sri Lanka from the morning you land. A Friday departure from Gatwick means a Saturday arrival in Colombo: Saturday is the first hotel night to book. If you want a room as soon as you arrive, arrange early access separately.

Route announcement checked: 4 November 2026. Look at both ends of the journey before reserving hotels. With three weekly services, moving your outbound or return date can change how many nights you have on the island. Count the nights between landing in Colombo and taking off again, especially if you have two weeks of annual leave.
Should you stay in Colombo when you arrive?
Bandaranaike International Airport is in Katunayake, outside central Colombo. Negombo can suit a first night when you want to rest before travelling inland. Choose Colombo if spending an evening in the city is part of the holiday you want.
If your flight lands early, arriving at your hotel does not necessarily mean your room will be ready. We can check early access and any additional cost before you fly. For the final night, we work backwards from your departure time before deciding whether to keep you at the beach or bring you closer to the airport.
Which coast suits a Sri Lanka winter holiday?
For a December, January or February holiday with several days by the sea, we would start with the south or west coast. The northeast monsoon makes the southwest a popular winter beach choice. November is different: the island is still in an inter-monsoon period, when heavy showers and rough seas are possible. March often works for a south coast stay, with some flexibility for afternoon showers.
Think about how you will use the hotel on a rainy afternoon. A shaded veranda and a comfortable room can be more valuable than an extra excursion. If sea swimming is a priority, tell us before choosing a property. A beachfront address tells you where the hotel is, but very little about the water immediately outside it.
How many nights do you need?
| Nights on the island | How we would spend them |
|---|---|
| 7 nights | Choose two main bases, such as Sigiriya and the coast. Build arrival and departure arrangements around those stays. |
| 10 nights | Prioritise two or three regions. If wildlife matters most, give the safari its own stay and leave another region for a future visit. |
| 12 to 14 nights | Combine heritage, hill country and wildlife with a coastal finish. Give the places you care about at least one full day without a hotel move. |
| More than 14 nights | Extend a favourite stay, explore another region or give a specialist interest more time. |
A suggested 14-night Sri Lanka itinerary
This route is for someone who enjoys exploring and wants to finish by the sea. The nights are a starting point for planning, not a fixed package.
| Base | Nights | What the stay gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Negombo or Colombo | 1 | Rest after arrival, or choose Colombo for an evening in the city. |
| Sigiriya or Dambulla | 3 | Two full days for the Cultural Triangle without changing hotels. |
| Kandy | 2 | Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic before continuing uphill. |
| One hill-country base | 3 | Leave time for tea, a walk and an afternoon at your hotel. |
| Wildlife stay | 2 | Settle in before a safari and avoid a long transfer immediately afterwards. |
| South or west coast | 3 | Finish with beach time and, from a suitable base, a visit to Galle Fort. |
| Total | 14 | Six bases, with the route adjusted around your flights. |
Which experiences belong in your itinerary?
Culture: choose the visits you want time to explore
Sigiriya’s rock fortress and Dambulla’s cave temples give you two quite different mornings from the same base. Travellers with a deeper interest in history might devote another day to Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura. In Kandy, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic adds a living place of worship to the journey.
Tell us if anyone is uncomfortable with heights or long stairways. That changes how we plan the Sigiriya visit, and what the rest of the family can enjoy together.

Tea country: choose the stay before the station
Decide what you would like to wake up to: a walk through tea country, a peaceful estate setting, or a day out around Ella. Three nights in one place give you two whole days to enjoy it. Splitting them between hotels leaves just one full day between check-ins.

Wildlife: plan the safari and the overnight stay together
If elephants are your main interest, consider Udawalawe. Yala is another option for a southern itinerary, with habitat for leopards, elephants and numerous birds. No individual sighting is guaranteed. Choose the park around your interests and the direction of your route.
A lodge described as “near the park” may still involve a drive before your jeep reaches the relevant entrance. We check that journey, the start time and what is included: park admission, safari vehicle and guiding. It makes a difference when travelling with children or arranging a second excursion.

The coast: a few days in Galle or a few days at the beach?
A stay inside Galle Fort gives you streets, verandas and ramparts to explore on foot. A beach hotel outside the fort offers a different rhythm, with time by the pool or shore and Galle as an outing. If you picture a walk to dinner most evenings, say so. That preference may point to a different hotel than a request for privacy and direct beach access.

Can you include the scenic train journey?
Build a hill-country stay you would enjoy even without the train. Sri Lanka Railways announced that Badulla to Nanu Oya services would resume in June 2026 after restoration work. That was a section-specific announcement, not confirmation of a through train from Kandy to Ella.
Our Colombo team checks the operating section and seat availability for your dates, then works out how you and your luggage will reach the next hotel. If a suitable train is unavailable, the journey can continue by road.
What should your Sri Lanka quotation include?
- Hotels: the named property, room category, meal plan and number of nights at each stop.
- Transport and guiding: airport transfers, touring vehicle, chauffeur-guide and any separate site guide.
- Experiences: entrance tickets, safari vehicle and permits, and the status of any requested rail seats.
- Arrival arrangements: early check-in or late check-out where requested, with any additional charge specified.
- Booking terms: payment dates, cancellation conditions and anything payable during the holiday.
With these details together, you can see what a day will actually involve, from who meets you in the morning to which costs are still to come.
Can you combine Sri Lanka with the Maldives?
Yes. One option for a two-week stay is nine nights in Sri Lanka and five in the Maldives. We would shorten the Sri Lanka circuit rather than squeeze six bases into nine nights. If your Maldives stay already gives you the beach time you want, those Sri Lanka nights can go towards culture, wildlife or tea country.
Before committing to both hotels and flights, check how your Colombo to Malé arrival fits the transfer to your chosen resort. Our teams in Colombo and Malé can coordinate the flight, luggage allowances, onward transfer and final departure as one journey.
Frequently asked questions
Is ten nights enough for a first visit?
Yes. Select two or three main regions and keep a full day at the places you most want to explore.
Should we book flights before choosing hotels?
Check both together if your dates are flexible. If flights are already booked, we can shape the itinerary around them.
Can we arrange a private holiday?
Yes. We can plan a private itinerary around your preferred pace, accommodation and interests, with transport and excursions set out in your proposal.
Do we need to choose hotels before enquiring?
No. Your travel month, number of nights, budget and the experiences you care about are enough to start.
