Remembering Mohamed Umar Manik: A Pioneer of Maldivian Tourism
The Maldives has lost one of its most influential visionaries. Mohamed Umar Manik, affectionately known as M.U. Manik, passed away on Saturday in Singapore at the age of 78. His contributions to the tourism industry helped shape the Maldives into the world-renowned destination it is today.
In 1972, Manik, together with a group of entrepreneurs, co-founded the country’s first resort, Kurumba Village, on Vihamanaafushi island. This bold initiative came at a time when the Maldives was just beginning to be recognized for its potential as a tourist destination. The success of Kurumba Village paved the way for a thriving tourism sector that now attracts travelers from across the globe.
Manik’s innovative vision introduced the “one island, one resort” concept, which remains a defining feature of Maldivian hospitality. Through his leadership at Universal Enterprises, he helped establish the Maldives as one of the most celebrated luxury destinations in the world.
Beyond his entrepreneurial achievements, Manik dedicated decades to public service and industry leadership. He served as the long-standing chairman of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry and contributed to various national institutions, inspiring generations of tourism professionals and helping shape policies that continue to support the growth of the sector.
At Zaha Travels, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues. Mohamed Umar Manik’s vision, dedication, and remarkable contributions will always be remembered as an integral part of the Maldives’ story. His legacy continues to inspire those who share a passion for the beauty and hospitality of these islands.
